God of War Ragnarok is an action adventure game that is the fifth main installment in the God of War series, launched in 2005. It was developed by Santa Monica Studio, owned by PlayStation Studios, and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. In terms of the pace and flow of gameplay, as well as the way the action is carried out, the game follows the path established by the 2018 God of War game.

Plot

The plot of God of War Ragnarok is set several years after the events presented in the previous installment of the series. The title Ragnarok, or the great battle between gods and giants that is to lead to the end of the world, is approaching fast. The fact that the preceding Great Winter (Fimbulvinter) has already reached Midgard proves it. In order to avoid the inevitable tragedy that the confrontation with the Aesir will undoubtedly bring, Kratos wants to keep Atreus safe at all costs. However, the son of a Spartan warrior is consumed by a desperate curiosity about his identity and the role he will play in the coming events. The heroes are about to embark on another challenging adventure where they will have to make choices that will determine not only their fate but also the future of all nine worlds.

Game mechanics

In GoW Ragnarok we observe the action from third person perspective (TPP). The adventure takes us through all nine worlds known from Norse mythology. Both previously inaccessible lands, i.e. Vanaheim inhabited by the Van, Svartalfheim which is the home of dwarves and Asgard which is the home of the Aesir, as well as new places in already visited worlds await us: Alfheim, Muspelheim, Helheim, Niflheim, Jotunheim, and Midgard.

Travelling through varied locations - from jungles to vast labyrinth-like mines - we complete tasks pushing forward the plot and learn more about successive fragments of the story, perform various side missions, solve environmental puzzles and, as befits a game about the god of war, fight hordes of enemies.

Game uses the combat system known from its predecessor, which, however, received a number of improvements and new elements. During battles we have to carefully observe the enemy's movements, make timely dodges and launch quick counterattacks. We eliminate enemies using the protagonist's iconic blades and an axe called Leviathan, which Kratos not only beats up enemies but also throws and then summons to himself, just like Thor does with Mjolnir. In the fight we also use the help of Atreus, who actively supports us. As we progress we develop the hero and improve his weapons and armor, which with time allows us to face stronger and stronger opponents.

Various opponents stand in our way - from regular ones acting as "cannon fodder" to gigantic monsters straight out of Norse mythology. As Kratos has a beef with the Aces, he's also pursued by much more powerful opponents, led by the vengeful goddess Freya and the aforementioned Thor.

Technical aspects

God of War Ragnarok runs on the technology developed for the previous part of the series. Graphics in this game is of the highest quality; both models full of details and rich animations of characters, as well as detailed, diverse surroundings make an impression.
